The wooden fence surrounding the garden blends beautifully with the surroundings. However, it is exposed to the harmful effects of atmospheric factors, which over time causes it to lose its radiance and requires renovation. How to restore the wooden fence to regain its charm and former glory?
At the beginning we check the technical condition of the fence. If repairs are required, we replace damaged or very old rails with new ones. If this is not necessary, we move on to the next step, which is to remove the old shell.
We also compensate for any kind of imperfections in order to obtain a smooth substrate, free of any defects that could adversely affect the adhesion of the impregnates and paints used at a later stage. This can be done with a 150-200 grit sandpaper placed on a float, which will improve the performance of the operation.
If you have a large fence for processing, it is better to use a mechanical grinder. The use of abrasive paper in this case would significantly extend the renovation work. Special preparations for removing old coatings are also available on the market.
Greasy dirt should also be removed from the fence. For this purpose, a cloth soaked in extraction gasoline will be particularly helpful. We also need to get rid of the greenish or grey air raid, which can be covered with a wooden fence. This should be done before proceeding to the next stage, which is to protect the surface with impregnation or paint.
Remember, however, not to remove moss and fungi with a dry putty. In this way we get rid of the growths, but at the same time we spread their spores, which certainly does not serve the fence. The best way to get rid of greenish and grey deposits is to use a moss remover. Usually it also has some preservative properties.
Now it's time for a wood preservative. It will protect the wood against harmful effects of weather conditions, especially moisture and ultraviolet radiation. Protection against biological hazards, i.e. fungi, mould and insects, is also important.
When choosing the right wood preservative, pay attention to what kind of application is required. In the case of some preparations, it is sufficient to apply a single layer in order to protect the wood properly. However, there are also less convenient means available on the market, which force the user to apply several layers, and even perform interlayer sanding, which makes the whole process of wood preservation longer and requires more work.
To make the fence look even nicer, we can paint it. Which wood paint is the optimal choice then? The emulsion should be applied first of all:
Another solution is a lacquer, sometimes referred to as azure paint. It will create a permanent barrier on the fence to protect the wood against moisture ingress and the effects of intense sunlight.
Renovation of the wooden fence is a bit labor- and time-consuming, but the effects of the work will surely delight us. They allow to restore the fence to its former glory. They also make it possible to protect the wood for the next few seasons.
