Atopic dermatitis is one of the frequent reasons for parents' visits to paediatric surgeries. Most often it appears already in the first months of a child's life. It affects toddlers who suffer from food or inhalation allergies, or are genetically burdened because, for example, one of their parents is an allergy sufferer.
It is commonly accepted that atopic dermatitis appears on the cheeks in the form of "painted", often also strongly red and having numerous skin blemishes. However, it is worth knowing that symptoms of AD may also appear on other parts of the body. Irritations and sore spots under the nappy, horny skin with dilated pores on the face, dark spots in the elbow bends, pustules on the legs and hands, dry skin on the bottom and back, etc. can often be observed. Parents are not able to diagnose AD in their child on their own, not only because of the multitude of possible symptoms, but above all because some of them may be confusingly similar to other dermatological or systemic problems.
The treatment of atopic dermatitis is very important. Not only because of the risk of skin lesions and oozing blisters, but above all because of the child, who certainly feels a huge discomfort associated with it. In addition, any damage or changes in the skin are like an open way for bacteria to penetrate, which, as we know, can have serious consequences.
It is very important to treat the skin of a toddler suffering from AD, i.e. to use delicate towels and clothes made of good soft cotton or silk. How we care for your baby's skin is also very important. A toddler suffering from AD can only be bathed in special cosmetics with a very gentle effect. Its skin should also be moisturized with specialist lotions, which improve the condition of the skin and soothe irritations.
