joint medications

Pain in joints, bones and muscles is very often the first signal of inflammatory conditions developing in the body. They may also be a symptom of diseases such as rheumatism or osteoporosis. Effective control of these discomfort-causing ailments is possible thanks to the use of analgesics and anti-inflammatory preparations.

Anti-inflammatory effect

Anti-inflammatory preparations for joints belong to the group of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs). These substances act by inhibiting the activity of the enzyme cyclooxygenase (COX), which takes part in the synthesis of prostaglandins. Prostaglandins are transmitters that stimulate pain receptors and contribute to the formation of fever and swelling. NSAIDs, by inhibiting the activity of cyclooxygenase, reduce the production of prostaglandins, and thus, reduce the feeling of pain, swelling and fever. Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs have an additional effect: they inhibit the synthesis of rheumatoid factor as well as the activity of enzymes degrading connective tissue. This additionally affects their effectiveness in case of joint pains.

Anti-inflammatory joint medications quickly reach the focus of pain and bring the desired relief from pain. Such preparations effectively improve the comfort of movement, improve the functioning of joints and support the performance of many everyday activities.

Types of medicines

Among anti-inflammatory drugs for joints we can distinguish mainly tablets. The most common ingredient is naproxene, ibuprofen, ketoprofen, meloxicam or nabumetone. However, they have many side effects, so, despite the fact that they are available without a prescription, it is advisable to consult a doctor. Those taking other measures at the same time should in particular seek advice from a specialist. Some painkillers and anti-inflammatory joint medications interact with other substances.

Ointments and gels with analgesic and anti-inflammatory effects are also very popular and effective. Their composition includes such popular active substances as: diclofenac or pixicam. They also belong to the non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs). Such preparations, in order to feel their effect, should be rubbed into the skin 4-5 times a day. Often doctors offer gels and ointments as the first line of treatment. They have a great advantage - they do not burden the stomach, liver or intestines and have much less side effects than oral preparations.

Currently, pharmacies offer anti-inflammatory drugs for over-the-counter joints. In case of mild inflammatory conditions it is worth to reach for them in order to relieve pain and improve the functioning of joints. Drugs for joint pain (no matter if you have a prescription or not) must be selected individually. Not every person will be affected by the same active substance. The use of such preparations should also be adapted to the severity of the pain. Contraindications for the use of anti-inflammatory drugs for the joints should also be borne in mind, especially in the elderly, who often take other measures, and in those suffering from chronic diseases.
