Sugar, sugar everywhere - you can think when you're in the shop and browse the labels of different products. The fact that it is too much, so it is not surprising that we reflexly refuse to consume this ingredient even more. How? The easiest way to avoid it, but is it really? Is it so easy? Probably not, because many people would not have been able to cope without this well-known sweetness. So it is better to find a substitute with a similar taste, and the aspartame sweetener is worth recommending.
Imagine that you have access to special sugar, which is much sweeter than traditional sugar. How much? About 180-200 times! At the same time it does not translate into its energy value, which is practically zero. Sounds interesting, right? And the best thing about it is that you don't have to imagine it anymore, because this agent is easily accessible. It is - mentioned in the introduction - aspartame, which thanks to its properties is used in the diet of people who either cannot or do not want to use sugar. It is a substance belonging to the group of peptide esters, discovered quite accidentally....
The American chemist James M. Schlaterr was successful in 1965. Of course, it is a coincidence that it cannot be planned or even thought about, and it is often the case that its appearance precedes a completely different event. In this case, it was work on a drug for gastric ulcers.
The scientist, wanting to lift a piece of paper, instinctively licked his finger. And this was the beginning of the discovery, because at that moment the perpetrators of the whole confusion - particles of aspartame - were already on his skin. Their very intense, sweet taste interested Schlatter and... that's how it all started.
Aspartame is not sugar, so you will not find it in every (almost) food article, but it still exists in many different products, which we reach for every day. The most famous products are carbonated drinks and isotonic flavoured waters or chewing gum. It is also present in jellies, cakes, some yoghurts, cocoa, frozen tea or even in flavoured beers. Interestingly, it also appears more and more often in pharmaceuticals, for example in sparkling tablets.
Certainly, many people have heard of the controversies surrounding this sweetener. There is an opinion that aspartame is unhealthy, that it causes many diseases, that the same evil. But it's all... it's not true. Few people know that the product, since its introduction to public use, has already undergone more than 500 toxicological, clinical and epidemiological studies.
All studies have confirmed what people who use aspartame on a daily basis know very well - the sweetener is completely safe. For everyone, because different people took part in the tests - adults, children, breastfeeding women or people with diabetes. Even the Ministry of Health has joined the debate on the alleged harmfulness of aspartame, stating that everything is fine, that the substance has no side effects and that its use in various products is fully in line with EU law.
As you can see, aspartame does not cause any health damage, on the contrary - it has a salutary effect on our condition. Our teeth, which are in better condition, because the sweetener added to food does not increase (as is the case with sugar) the risk of caries. Sugar is calories, and they cause unhealthy obesity. When using a sweetener, we do not have to worry about it, because, as we mentioned earlier, it has practically no energy value. Anyway, it is confirmed by the Polish Diabetology Society and the Polish Society for Obesity Research.
It is also worth knowing that aspartame is an excellent remedy for people with disorders of the carbonate economy (type 2 diabetes, glucose intolerance, etc.).
It is worth replacing sugar with aspartame, there are many reasons to do it today!
